#pragma mark: Xcode’s Patron Saint of Grouping

‘#pragma mark’ is a helpful directive for Xcode to help you organize code in an implementation file. With it you can group methods together for easy navigation, here is an example:

#pragma mark-

#pragma mark Picker Data Source Methods

And here is what it looks like in Xcode:

I like this much better than my previous system of making little comment headers for a group of methods, thanks Apress iOS 5 book!

MSNBC.com on Samsung’s “Head Start”

Really enjoyed the article on MSNBC.com about the Samsung Galaxy SIII getting a “head start” on the yet to be released iPhone 5. I don’t think I’ve seen that term used in regards to cell phone hardware before but I like it. It does beg the question: how will Samsung beat the iPhone 4S with its mighty 8 month head start?

I also liked the part about how launch day demand is as high for the SIII as it was for the 4S:

Also in Frankfurt some 100 people were in the queue this morning when the Deutsche Telekom shop on the city’s busiest shopping street The Zeil opened.

That’s about the same as when the latest iPhone went on sale,” said 21-year old Steven Barth, who was taking orders at the shop. “I think our publicity campaign also helps. We are giving away about a hundred Galaxys today, in this shop.”

I suggest for the Galaxy SIV launch that Samsung check how many people lined up for the eventual iPhone 5 and then give away twice as many phones. Boom, the SIV has 2x demand that the iPhone 5 does on launch!

Subconscious Nerdy Behavior of the Week

Apparently, whenever I have to give the condition of an object I default to the scale used by comic books, here it is:

  • Mint
  • Near Mint
  • Very Fine
  • Fine
  • Very Good
  • Good
  • Fair
  • Poor

Got halfway through my new move-in checklist before I realized I was doing it.

My Condolences to Opera’s Handful of Users

Seeing the story on BGR about the possibility of Opera being acquired by Facebook reminded me of the quote from Star Wars.

Original Obi-Wan Quote:

“I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.”

Updated for the Opera acquisition by Facebook:

“I felt a disturbance in the Internets, as if tens of voices suddenly cried out in terror and then continued to cry ad-nauseum. I fear something that wont affect very many people has happened.”

Comparing Motorcycles to Short Buses

I feel something is missing from the latest T-Mobile commercial that compares the iPhone to some random Android phone that uses T-Mo’s version of “4G”. In the commercial it shows T-Mobile’s Liv Tyler-esque spokeswoman blasting past another motorcyclist that represents the iPhone on Verizon/AT&T.

All network speed comparisons aside, all I can think about is the announcement T-Mobile made a while back that there is over a million unlocked iPhones stuck using their Edge network.

This commercial can still be accurate, they just need to add one thing: both motorcycles blasting past a short bus representing all those Edge-bound T-Mobile iPhone users.

Most Good: The 5 Best Improvements Introduced in Diablo 3

Here is my list of the 5 best improvements introduced in Diablo 3:
  • No Scrolls of Town Portal to mess with, just press ‘T’
  • All of your money does not drop from dying
  • Ability to reassign skills on the fly
  • Warp directly to another player by clicking their flag in town
  • Ability to revive fallen party members

The 6 Best Sketch Comedy Series Ever

Here is my list of the best sketch comedy shows ever. They are not ordered because greatness has no numerical value!

  • The Chappelle Show – Legendary, from the Player Haters Ball to cutting the head off of a baby dinosaur, every episode is a gem.
  • Upright Citizens Brigade – Great cast and the show that has one of my favorite skits of all time, Ass Pennies.
  • The Peter Serafinowicz Show – This show along with Snuff Box give me the cry alones at night because they only ran for one short season. The salt in the wound was Running Wilde being canceled, need to find a new way to get my Serafino-fix. Lately I have just been printing his tweets, cutting them up and rubbing them into my gums just to get by.
  • Little Britain – Solid. Too much good stuff. My only wish for this show is that they have an episode where Vicky Pollard attends a Fat Fighters meeting.
  • Snuff Box – Matt Berry and Rich Fulcher, ’nuff said.
  • That Mitchell and Webb Look – Someday I would love to make a Numberwang iOS game, I just need to master the rules first.

No, SNL is not on the list and that is for one reason: it has been running longer than all of the other shows on this list combined. SNL could have only 10% watchable content and that is still a longer run than any show on this list.

My One Annoyance with Squarespace

Been very happy with Squarespace so far, I’ve stuck with it longer than any other blog platform I have played with over the years.

My one major complaint: SSL login is not available for the basic-level plan

That is the one feature I would like to see added to the basic plan. This makes it a bit of a headache if I want to login when I’m out and about on public wifi. Then I have to either login using the app on my phone over 3G(err, I mean “4G”) or use logmein to remote to a computer at my house and make a post. Not an ideal setup.

Beyond that I have no complaints, Squarespace rocks, though a bit insecurely for some plans.

Not Sure Which is Worse…

iTunes or Entourage?

I always wondered if iTunes for Windows was made in retaliation for Microsoft Entourage?

Microsoft did have the decency to put that dog down in 2011 but the bloated, slow, horrific zombie known as iTunes on Windows lives on. To be fair, iTunes on Mac is no picnic either. I’m pretty sure the phrase ‘you cannot polish a turd’ applies here.

/endrant

Had to vent a bit, iTunes seems to be the major driver for family tech support calls. Entourage was just dragged into this rant because it is just horrible. My hate for Entourage stems from having to rebuild user’s database weekly because it would corrupt and die.

K, done, I feel much better.
